Sound Slides: Graffiti Alphabet

These images are part of a series on sustainability that I shot for Dr. Trayes’ photojournalism class at Temple University as part of the “Sustainability Week” exhibit. If I can just be really corny for a minute, it was pretty exciting to see my images displayed in such a large format for everyone to see (top row). They were captured at the Schuylkill River Park Community Garden, which is located at about 24th and Spruce streets in Center City, Philadelphia. The garden began growing in 1982 through the determination of a group of local volunteers who transformed the location from Kelly Brickyard and R&O Railroad Sidings to an urban oasis of fruits, vegetables, flowers, and herbs. Some of the images were also shot at Greensgrow Farms, which occupies one square city block at Cumberland and Gaul streets in Kensington, Philadelphia. This urban garden shares a similar story as the first in that it was once a government superfund sight contaminated with hazardous substances. Now they grow all kinds of fun things there, teach growing and cooking classes to the community members, raise chickens, and generally do great things.
